Twin Up! Concept Car

Volkswagen has taken another step in the direction of extreme fuel efficiency, showing off the Twin Up concept car at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The concept vehicle draws on the technology used for the highly impressive XL1, the limited production plug-in hybrid diesel vehicle from VW that can achieve an estimated 261 mpg. If put into production, the Twin Up would represent a high production volume plug-in diesel hybrid that incorporates portions of the XL1 powertrain into its design. Part of the brilliances of the Twin Up concept is the compact hybrid powertrain that does not encroach on occupant or cargo space whatsoever. This is achieved through the use of the new vehicle architecture Volkswagen has designed specifically to accommodate both traditional pure combustions powertrains and well as hybrid setups. VW did have to extend the front overhang by 1.2 inches to make room for the hybrid system, but other than that the body is the same dimensions as on a production Up. The electric motor, combustion engine and the transmission are located at the front of the vehicle, while the diesel fuel tank, electric motor battery and 12-volt electrical system battery are all located in the rear directly under the cargo area. The TDI Clean Diesel engine is connected to a 35 kW electric motor and a seven-speed automatic DQ200 DSG transmission. Aerodynamics are excellent with a drag coefficient of just 0.30. The Twin Up’s curb weight is light at 2,657 lbs. Other features help maximize fuel mileage, like low-rolling-resistance tires. The powertrain accommodates electric-only driving for a range of about 31 miles. The “New European Cycle” method of testing fuel efficiency pegs consumption at 214 mpg and CO2 emissions at just 27 g/km. The efficiency doesn’t mean the car is slow. In fact, it can accelerate from 0 to 37 mph in just 8.8 seconds in electric-only mode.
